Top 50 gastropubs in the UK announced

A restaurant in Buckinghamshire that's already gained the distinction of being the first pub to earn two coveted Michelin stars has been crowned the best gastropub in Britain.
In the 2012 Top 50 Gastropub Awards hosted this week, members of the industry named Tom Kerridge's Hand & Flowers pub in Marlow the best in the UK, moving it up from second place standing last year.
It's been a banner few years for the husband-and-wife team who earned their first Michelin star a year after opening their doors in 2005, and their second star last year -- the first time in the publication's history.
More than 500 members of the industry ranging from operators, chefs, food writers, to pub guide editors voted on their favorite gastropub. The competition is divided into eight geographical regions and judges vote for four pubs they've visited in the past year.
At the Hand and Flowers, meanwhile, diners convene around an open brick fireplace at rustic wood tables set under low-beamed ceilings, tucking into pub fare that's 'sophisticated yet familiar' -- modernized British classics and rustic French dishes.
A sample menu includes slow-cooked duck breast with Savoy cabbage, duck fat chips and gravy or roast hog with salt baked potatoes with apple sauce, and for dessert, Glazed Cox's apple tart with egg nog ice cream.
Diners looking for a Michelin-worthy meal on the cheap can also get a two-course lunch for £15 (€18).
Interestingly, while Pipe & Glass ranks ninth in the gastropub awards, the 2012 edition of Michelin Eating Out In Pubs Guide named the East Yorkshire eatery pub of the year.
